Frequently Asked Questions

What is SCUBA?
SCUBA stands for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, and it consists of the aqualung equipment which enables us to breathe underwater. You will learn more about this during your basic training.

What do I need? How long does it take to learn to dive, and how much does it cost?
See the Learning to dive section.

Do you need to be fit to scuba dive?
Well, come along and look at our members and you decide…! You should be at least averagely fit - this is a physical sport and you will be expected to carry your kit around (weighing approx 20kg) at the pool and to/from the boat. You need to be in good general health, and be able to answer a few basic medical questions (see the self certification form). There are a few medical conditions which might mean you have to have a medical with a diving doctor before taking up SCUBA diving, some of which might exclude you from diving.  If in any doubt we will ask for a medical with a diving doctor, before starting open water training.

What other courses do you offer?
We encourage divers to continue training and practicing skills and to undertake further qualifications, both dive related such as BSAC Sports Diver, BSAC Dive Leader, BSAC Advanced Diver, Nitrox Diver, O2 and First Aid for divers, and other courses such as Boat Handling, Diver Cox’n, Chartwork and Position Fixing, Nautical Archeology, and Underwater Photography. BSAC also offer instructor training courses. The full list of BSAC courses can be found on the BSAC website, and are sent out annually to members by BSAC.

We have the facility to offer many of these within the club, or in conjunction with the Kernow Association of Sub Aqua Clubs (KASAC) or other organizations such as Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Maritime Archeological Society (CISMAS).
